As the end of Ramadan approaches, one question comes up every year in every Muslim household: have I paid my Zakat al-Fitr? Unlike the annual zakat on wealth, this charity is due from everyone, rich or modest, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
1What is Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr is an obligatory (wajib) charity paid at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is due from every Muslim able to pay it, for themselves and for each dependent: spouse, children, dependent parents. It differs from the annual zakat on wealth, calculated against a threshold (nisab): Zakat al-Fitr is due from everyone, regardless of wealth level.
2What is the amount of Zakat al-Fitr in 2027?
Traditionally set as the equivalent of one meal (roughly one 'saa'' of a staple food: wheat, dates, rice...), Zakat al-Fitr is nowadays most often paid as a cash equivalent. For 2027, TreeDon sets this amount at €9 per person, to cover the real cost of the food distributed to beneficiary families. An optional €2 add-on lets you receive photos and videos of the distribution.
"The Prophet ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and indecent speech, and as food for the needy." (Reported by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah)
3When should it be paid?
Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer — paying it afterwards counts merely as a voluntary charity (sadaqa), not as fulfilling this specific obligation. It is however permitted, and even recommended for practical reasons, to pay it in the last days of Ramadan so beneficiary families can make use of it on the day of the feast itself.
4Who must pay it?
Every Muslim head of household must pay Zakat al-Fitr for themselves as well as for each dependent: spouse, children, and dependent parents if financially responsible for them. One payment per household member, regardless of age.
5How TreeDon distributes your Zakat al-Fitr
Every donation is fully converted into food and distributed directly to families in need before the day of Eid. You can pay for yourself and your entire household in a single order, and add the photo/video option to concretely follow the impact of your donation.
