The birth of a child is one of the greatest joys of a lifetime. In Islamic tradition, this happiness comes with an act of gratitude to Allah and of sharing with those in need: the Aqiqa.
1What is Aqiqa?
Aqiqa is the sacrifice of one or more animals performed on the occasion of a child's birth, as thanks to Allah. It is a Sunnah strongly recommended by the Prophet ﷺ, though not obligatory (wajib). The meat is then shared between family, relatives and those in need — an act of joy that becomes an act of solidarity.
2How many sheep for Aqiqa?
Prophetic tradition distinguishes the number of animals by the child's sex: two sheep for a boy, one sheep for a girl.
"For a boy, two similar sheep, and for a girl, one sheep." (Reported by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, from Aisha)
3When should Aqiqa be performed?
The recommended practice is to perform it on the seventh day after birth, the same day the child is named and their first hair is shaved. If that isn't possible, Aqiqa can be performed at any later time — better late than never.
4Why perform your Aqiqa with TreeDon
