Dear mum, if you are reading this, you are carrying or have just welcomed a baby. Congratulations! Between nappies, short nights and big emotions, one question often comes up: “How will I do my child’s Aqiqa?” Take a breath: it is simpler than you think.
1Aqiqa in a nutshell
Aqiqa is the sacrifice offered to thank Allah for the birth of a child. It is a strongly recommended Sunnah, not an obligation. The meat is shared with relatives and above all with families in need: your joy becomes a meal for others.
2Before the birth: prepare your mind and your budget
Nothing requires you to organise everything before the delivery. But setting a little money aside early in the pregnancy removes pressure later. According to the Sunnah, one sheep is offered for a girl and two for a boy: with TreeDon that is €120 for a girl and €230 for a boy, all included.
3Days 1 to 6: enjoy your baby
In these first days your only job is to rest, feed your baby and regain strength. The Aqiqa can wait. Take your time choosing the name with your spouse, without rushing.
4Day 7: the ideal day
The Sunnah recommends performing the Aqiqa on the seventh day, the day the child’s name is also announced. Many scholars also recommend shaving the baby’s hair then and giving its weight in silver as charity. If you are not ready that day, that is fine.
5What if day 7 has passed?
The 14th or 21st day is preferred, but it remains possible later. Many parents do it weeks or even years afterwards. Above all, do not feel guilty: better late than never.
6Doing it online, without exhausting yourself
After giving birth, organising a sacrifice, finding a butcher and cooking for guests can feel impossible. With TreeDon you choose your option, enter your child’s first name, and our team performs the sacrifice according to the Sunnah. The meat is distributed to families in need and you receive photos and videos, a lovely keepsake for your child.
“Every newborn is held in pledge for his Aqiqa, sacrificed for him on the seventh day.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa’i)
You do not need to do everything perfectly. A sincere intention, a little organisation and help from people you trust are enough. Take care of yourself and your baby: the rest will follow.
